商品描述

The book dissects the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of the leading causes of global morbidity and mortality, i.e.cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The chapters discuss topics related to the role reactive oxygen species (ROS) play in hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes, obesity and related pathologies. The authors also shed light on gender differences in the onset and pathologies of some of these diseases. Moreover, how ROS and aging interplay to precipitate cardiovasculo-metabolic disease is discussed and highlighted. Preventive measures that can abrogate ROS-induced cardiovasclo-metabolic disease are discussed and clarified in the hope of reducing such a debilitating battery of diseases. A section dedicated to antioxidants as potential therapy is also included. Furthermore, given the complexity of the mechanisms implicated in ROS-modulated responses, it remains challenging to assert a conclusive argument and pre-determined regimen for incorporating antioxidants into conventional therapies. Nonetheless, results from some clinical trials appear promising, warranting the addition of a chapter dedicated to such human trials.

In all of the chapters, the molecular, cellular, genetic, and pharmacological mechanisms implicated are covered from an applied science perspective.

This is an ideal book for basic researchers in the biomedical field, graduate students in biological and biomedical fields, medical students, instructors in medical and graduate schools, and professionals working for pharmaceutical companies.

Dr. Ali Hussein Eid, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Pharmacology at Qatar University.

Firas H. Kobaissy received a Ph.D. in molecular Neuroscience from the University of Florida (Gainesville) under the direction of Dr. Kevin K. Wang and Dr. Mark S. Gold. Most of his research focused on brain injury due to mechanical insult or due to drug abuse neurotoxicity using rat model. Dr. Kobaissy utilizes the state of the art proteomics tools to investigate cell death mechanisms involved in different brain insults.

Ahmed F. El-Yazbi graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Alexandria University, Egypt in June 2001 with top honors. He moved on to get his PhD degree from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, which was awarded in 2007. After the conclusion of his PhD, Dr. El-Yazbi was awarded two fellowships from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research and Alberta Innovates-Health Solutions, during which he conducted a research program studying the regulation of cerebral blood flow at the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Calgary, Canada. He is also a licensed Clinical Pharmacist and a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist with extensive experience in highly specialized pharmaceutical services. Dr. El-Yazbi has a very solid university-level teaching and research track record evident in over 15 years of experience teaching to pharmacy and medical students in Canadian, Egyptian, and Lebanese universities. He also has over nine years of experience as a clinical pharmacist. He has over 30 original research articles published in international peer-reviewed journals and serves as an independent reviewer for a number of scientific/professional journals and bodies. Dr. El-Yazbi's contributions are recognized by invitations to present, speak, and chair scientific sessions in multiple national, regional, and international venues. Ahmed's current research and teaching interests at University level focus on investigating the mechanisms of vascular dysfunction in early stages of metabolic disease together with the identification of possible targets for therapeutic intervention with these detrimental pathways, in addition to related Pharmacy Practice and Therapeutic issues.
