The science of studying mechanisms and machines is generally known as mechanism and machine theory. Kinematics of mechanisms is the analysis and synthesis of type, mobility, and motion of mechanisms, and it is the first consideration in the design of machines. This book is intended mainly for use as an undergraduate text for teaching theory and applications of mechanisms. It contains topics and material sufficient for a course with 3 to 4 credit hours. As prerequisites to the text, courses in college physics and calculus are sufficient.
The text contains 90 worked examples and 310 illustrations covering fundamental theory of kinematics and also engineering applications in machine tools, bicycles, motorcycles, automobiles, aircraft, and so on. At the end of the chapters there are a total of 168 problems of varying length and difficulty. These exercise problems are organized to help students follow and understand the contents of the text. More exercises are available from test problems provided in the Instructor’s Manual. To foster the appreciation of ancient designs in students, ancient mechanisms and antique models are included in the text. Furthermore, mechanisms with their associated computer animations and videos are provided on the text website.
